aletheic: revealing interaction
thesis (pdf)
Computer technology has become a central component of many aspects of life. It is used to communicate, and as a context for understanding or defining our place in the world. Comparison with older, more traditional cultures' methods of doing the same reveals something of the nature of modern technological life. The artistic spiritual traditions within these cultures serve as models to follow or react against as we consider the integration of technology into modern culture, and as we seek the relevance of doing so in the form of art.

The project created for this thesis, Aletheic, emerged from this exploration. Aletheic draws upon the visual aesthetic of mandalas, and attempts to recreate the connection found between individuals engaged in the traditions of Tibetan Buddhists and Australian Aboriginals. In addition, the use of modern digital technology to provide the means of interaction results in a methodology of design for multiuser interactive objects.
